As We Gather...
The church is not merely an association of outward ties and rites like other civic governments, however, but it is mainly an association of faith and of the Holy Spirit in men's hearts. To make it recognizable, this association has outward marks, the pure teaching of the Gospel and the administration of the sacraments in harmony with the Gospel of Christ. This church alone is called the body of Christ, which Christ renews, consecrates, and governs by his Spirit, as Paul testifies when he says (Ephesians 1:22, 23), 'And he has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness,' that is, the whole congregation 'of him who fills all in all.'" [Apology of the Augsburg Confession, Articles VII and VIII - THE CHURCH, paragraph 5, Tappert, p. 169.)
As the body of Christ gathers today at St. Paul Lutheran Church, West Point, Nebraska, we celebrate 155 years of God's grace proclaimed and lived week in and week out, year after year, and pray for His continued blessings and guidance. Lives and hearts have been touched by God's mercy and hope, as God's people gather to hear God's Word, receive His gifts of grace, and go into the community and world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to carry out Jesus' mission of making disciples of all nations until He returns. As Pastor John Gierke also celebrates his 30th year since his ordination into the office of the holy ministry, it is a "banner day" to celebrate our Triune God and His gifts for the Church and through the Church to the world as we look forward to celebrating the eternal marriage feast of the Lamb in the kingdom of heaven. To God Alone be ALL the Glory!
